WHY DO I EDUCATE?To help children and adults alike know that they are bigger than any of their circumstances, especially in circumstances of poverty and struggle. People who face socio economic factors need to know that education is a tool that will change their lives for the better.
After receiving four degrees in business including PhD., I went back to school to get a Masters Degree in Special Education. Teaching in the CCSD as a long term substitute I gained a passion for educating. It was so rewarding it prompted me to get the credentials that needed to become a licensed teacher. |
TEACHING RESUME & STATEMENT
As an educator I will teach and instruct by the guidelines of what is called the platinum rule. The golden rule teaches us to do onto others as we would have them do unto us. However, the platinum rule goes beyond that and it is for one to do more for others than one would expect for them to do for us. I will always attempt to operate by this rule in the class, outside of, and also in my community with character traits that speaks to honesty, integrity, and trust. I know that if I navigate my life with these entities I cannot and will not go wrong.
My self-assessment supports my professional disposition statement in that I believe that teachers should use a variety of instructional strategies to help their students learn. I am also aware that students learn in different ways; I have been a student for so many years in different subjects’ even for myself, I have learned and still continue to learn in different ways, therefore, I know firsthand on how important it is to have diverse instruction. The fact of the matter is I am new to teaching, the silver-lining is that, I am new not new to life and the lessons that one garners throughout a lifetime. I possess humor, empathy and I am warm. I believe that all students can learn; no matter race, creed, or color, and though learning styles may differ, the result is an educated student. The classroom environment should allow students the ability to feel safe in their environment and it should also provide a space conducive to learning. Teaching collaboratively when done right is a gift, to the students, and it is a gift to co-teachers because this style allows one to bounce ideas off each other to be the best for students. It also offers relief for colleagues. Teaching is not an easy profession so having a good collaboration can also take some of the burden off. Some years ago, I thoughtfully indulged into understanding diversity in inclusion, to adopt learners at Ford motor company. My thoughts then were that “this is a lesson that should be learned at an early age not as adults.” Being a child of the highest God I know that all of our lives, and the quality of, matters. God loves all of us and that is what I would bring to my classroom, learning and love.
I have grown in my professional disposition throughout this program, I currently work to train and develop as well as support professional adults with their learning. My coursework and program of study has allowed me to understand how everyone learns differently. Some people learn by reading, others learn by hearing, and many learn by hands-on interaction. My studies have allowed me to support different learning styles. I find that the model of code of ethics for educators and my teaching disposition have so many similarities. The Model Code of Ethics are guidelines for a professional educator, it was developed by other educators and it essentially just asks for us to operate in honesty, and uphold dignity in the profession that we have chosen.
To end plainly, I believe that learning is ongoing and is never ending. The steps that I will take to improve are these: I will always seek self-improvement. I will continue to be a student.
